Travel Tips Inspired Weekend Reads

I’m REALLY excited about today’s post.  It’s a travel tips inspired weekend reads, where I’m sharing all of my tips and tricks for traveling on a budget.

I saw the movie, “Where’d You Go Bernadette” this week.  And for one, it really made me want to go to Antartica.  But it also got me thinking about what it means to get out of your own world and all its ruts, and explore and expand yourself.  That’s what I love most about travel.

I’m fortunate now to have the time and money to do so a few times a year.  And a lot of people think it’s out of reach, but I’m here to tell you it isn’t.  It’s amazing what you can do on a budget!

Even when I was making under $20k a year and burdened with loads of student loans, it was always something I tried to make space for in my life, even if it meant a road trip to a neighboring city instead of taking an international flight.

When it comes to saving, it’s out of sight, out of mind for me.

When I first graduated, I opened a totally different savings account and automatically routed a little bit of my paycheck in every pay period.  I didn’t even keep the card in my wallet.  Sometimes it was as little as $40 a month, but you’d be surprised at how quickly this adds up over time.

Another one of my favorite travel tips is using SkyScanner.  This site allows you to put in a home airport and the month you’re looking to go, and it searches the entire world for what’s cheapest and when.  This is great if you’re not tied to a particular destination.  We did this to decide on a trip to the Dominican Republic years ago.

I also love Scott’s Cheap Flights, which is an email service you can sign up for that sends you daily cheap flights from your selected airports.  I usually put in Portland, Seattle and San Francisco, since it’s reasonably cheap to get to the other airports.  Today’s email told me that I can get to a ton of different cities in Europe from Seattle in the months of October to April for around $492.

Emirates First Class from SFO-Dubai

Don’t forget to sign up for airline and hotel rewards programs; that stuff SERIOUSLY adds up.  And if you have a travel points credit card, even better.  We flew to the Maldives and back in first class on our honeymoon for a ton of miles and a few hundred dollars; a ONE-WAY ticket in first class normally costs about $20,000.

More on that in a future post!

Can’t miss sights and sips on the Amalfi coast.

One of my favorite travel tips if you’re headed to Italy!

T R A V E L // If you're heading to the Amalfi coast this summer, beach clubs are a must. The public beaches get really crowded and with little amenities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In Postiano, we spent an amazing day at Bagni D'Arienzo. For 25 euros a person, you get a lounger, umbrella, towels, changing rooms and bathrooms and transportation to the club via boat. They have servers that come around all day with drinks plus a delicious restaurant to have lunch at. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It also feels a WORLDS away from the crowds.
