I have a lot of hair, so I am definitely the person with five hair ties around her wrist at all times. That’s why I was OBSESSED with these velvet hair bows and barrettes all over the place (LOVE these from Tory Burch Fall 2017 show). Of course, you could just tie a ribbon around your pony, but honestly, I could never get it to stay in place. That’s why I crafted this DIY velvet bow hair tie and a DIY velvet bow barrette.
This project is insanely easy. It took me about 15 minutes from start to finish with ten minutes of that being drying time. Not to mention, it cost me less than $5 when this Jennifer Behr velvet bow barrette that I used for inspo runs you $148.
DIY Velvet Bow Hair Tie (and Barrette)
What you need:
- assorted velvet ribbon (I ordered from MOOD which has infinite color and size choices – I used about a yard per project)
- I wanted a thinner bow for the hair tie…the pink ribbon is less than an inch (around 3/4) while the black ribbon is 1.5 inches wide
- hair tie and/ or barrette
- tacky glue and/ or hot glue gun
- scissors
Make it!
DIY VELVET BOW HAIR TIE
- Let’s take it back to elementary school! Cut a small piece of the velvet ribbon off the end- you’ll want it to be at least double the thickness of the ribbon. So for the 3/4 inch ribbon, I rounded up and cut off a two inch piece. This will be the piece that secures the bow to the hair tie. Set aside.
- Fold the remaining ribbon in half. Tie a single knot in the center of the ribbon.
- Make two evenly sized loops on either side of the knot. Glue to the knot and pinch.
- Place tacky or hot glue all over the small piece of ribbon that you put to the side. Wrap that small piece around the knot, the loops and the hair tie, holding it all in place and securing it to the hair tie.
- Set aside to dry, about 1o minutes (and I actually put a book on top of mine to make sure it stayed in place.)
- Trim any excess from the ends. Ta daaaa…
DIY VELVET BOW BARRETTE
Similar process here…
- Cut a small piece of the velvet ribbon off the end- you’ll want it to be at least double the thickness of the ribbon. So for the 1.5 inch ribbon, I cut off a three inch piece. Set aside.
- Fold the remaining ribbon in half. Tie a single knot in the center of the ribbon.
- Make two evenly sized loops on either side of the knot. Glue to knot and pinch.
- Place tacky or hot glue all over the small piece of ribbon you put to the side and wrap around the knot and the loops, holding it in place.
- Set aside to dry, about 10 minutes.
- Glue the bow to the barrette (and I would definitely use hot glue here- it just has better hold.)
- Let it dry five minutes, and you are ready to go!
