I’ve shared my Argentina photo diary and everything I wore on the trip, but today I wanted to share a review for one of our favorite hotels of the trip: Alpasion Lodge in Mendoza.
Alpasion Lodge is truly something special. It’s tucked away in the shadow of the Andes Mountains in the Uco Valley and is the perfect spot to stay for wine lovers and couples looking for a romantic getaway.
So first… a primer on Mendoza’s wine country and regions:
–Uco Valley (this is where Alpasion is): almost two hours south of Mendoza city center. The Uco Valley is the new kid on the block when it comes to Argentina’s wine scene. And being a newer, many of the winemakers are willing to take risks and be a little different with their wine. Also, a lot of European winemakers have come over and set up shop here.
–Luyan de Cuyo: up near the city center, about 25 minutes. Locals refer to this area as the home of the Malbec. Can easily bike from winery to winery with some exceptions.
–Maipu – closest wineries to the city, but people told us it was a little more dangerous, so we didn’t visit at all.
Why Stay in the Uco Valley
We stayed in both the Uco Valley and Mendoza city center. We spent three days touring the Uco wineries and also one up in Luyan de Cuyo.
The Uco Valley is definitely the most luxurious of the three winemaking areas in Mendoza; this is where a lot of celebrities visit or even own places. It just feels really special, and you have the opportunity to stay on an actual winemaking property.
Staying at a wine lodge had been on my bucket list for some time.
There’s something really cool about being able to relax with a bottle of wine that’s grapes grew mere feet from your bedroom. We even went for a run on a road through the vineyards one morning, which was such a simple yet incredible experience.
Alpasion Lodge Review
Alpasion Lodge is a six-room boho-chic wine lodge, situated in a 148-acre working vineyard.
It actually started as a luxury vacation rental amongst friends in 2014.
We absolutely loved staying at Alpasion. It was romantic, relaxing, and secluded in the best way possible. The staff was also incredibly helpful. And…those views!
Getting there…
The lodge helped orchestrate a car to pick us up at the Mendoza airport and drive us down to the Uco Valley. The transfer cost $90 for the two of us and took almost two hours.
Upon check-in, we were greeted with a glass of the lodge’s own Chardonnay.
Alpasion feels a lot more like a very luxe guesthouse than a traditional hotel. Everything is pretty new as the hotel has only been around for six years.
It’s decor feels very Southwestern and Sedona-ish.
Location
Alpasion Lodge’s location was perfect for what we were hoping to do, which was visit a handful of Uco Valley wineries over three days.
It is a totally rural boutique hotel, but it’s really close to many of the big wineries like The Vines, Salentein and Clos de los Siete.
It’s also close enough to go to neighboring hotels like Casa de Uco for dinner. The food and wine, by the way, at Casa de Uco were great, but go for the view alone:
The lodge also feels pretty spread out, despite being only a six room lodge. We RARELY saw anyone else staying there. It was like our own little vineyard hotel.
Rooms
I thought the rooms were sleek and clean and relatively big by South American standards. The beds were really comfortable.
Each also has a beautiful terrace with a hammock. I loved sitting out there with a cup of coffee and a book.
Bathrooms were small, but nice. My only minor con is that a lot of sand got in the bathroom through the ceiling after a windstorm one night.
No mini bar, but they were good about giving us water bottles every day and there’s a Nespresso with pods in the room.
There’s solid wifi and cable TV with plenty of English language channels.
Food and Beverage
Breakfast is included with the room rate, and each morning, they set out a delicious spread of yogurts, fruits, pastries, etc in their dining room. They brought me a plate of gluten free breads and pastries each morning.
They also will make you whatever types of eggs and/or breakfast meat you want.
The lodge has one restaurant on site that serves lunch and dinner. They cook with all local produce and meats.
We ended up eating lunch at different wineries each day, but had two dinners at Alpasion’s restaurant. Both of which were delicious.
They offer an incredibly affordable wine-paired dinner, featuring some of the lodge’s wines. And honestly, they were some of our favorite wines of the trip; we shipped six bottles home.
Service was awesome throughout. They were incredibly good with my food allergies. There were dishes on a set menu that I couldn’t eat one night, and they whipped up whatever I wanted in exchange.
One of the coolest things they offer is a weekly Argentinian asado on Sundays. An asado is essentially a barbecue. And they’ll cook under the stars outside with a clay oven and wood burning fire.
Amenities and Service
There is a small pool with a Jacuzzi. Again, it really doesn’t even matter what the pool is like, because this is where you’re sitting.
Plenty of reading and living spaces to hang out in.
It’s worth mentioning that it doesn’t have many of the amenities of a traditional hotel. Think more of a bed and breakfast.
There’s no room service or vending machine for snacks. Nor a front desk or taxi stand. However, the staff was always around and able set up transportation to different places, morning and night, with relative ease.
You can also order wine or snacks to your room during certain hours of the day.
Speaking of the staff, they did a great job of helping us coordinate winery tours, lunches and a car service to take us around each day in the weeks leading up to our trip.
Tip: Make sure to make reservations for everything in the Uco Valley. There’s not many wineries with walk-in availability.
Other Fun Things
- they offer an empanadas cooking class
- movie library and they’ll make you popcorn
- stargazing on the roof after sunset
- bikes for guest use.
I really can’t recommend Alpasion Lodge enough. It is perfect for couples who want to just relax.
I think it would make an ideal honeymoon location or for a couple considering a small wedding. It would be amazing to rent the whole house for a celebration of any kind.
And I think the value of this property is incredible. Our stay ran about $330/nt including taxes. That price is pretty good, considering a lot of the neighboring hotels go for over $1000/nt.
