Well, this is a series of posts LONG overdue, more on our home renovation! Today, I’m sharing a master bathroom renovation update. Coming next week and the following week will be posts on the status of our kitchen and master bedroom and plenty of inspiration if you’re working on or hoping to work on a renovation of your own.
So, we are coming on a year of owning this house! I cannot even believe. What was once a 3-4 month renovation has turned into a year +, due to delays with Covid-19. Our contractor and her team have been able to work through it socially distanced, which of course takes more time because less people can be inside together.
However, our biggest setback came with the Portland permitting office. We needed a permit to add a skylight to the master bathroom and move a door in our kitchen. Unfortunately, the office closed for two months just after we started renovating.
Once it opened back up, we had to wait several more months for them to issue us the permit. During that time, basically nothing else on the house could be done.
We are finally (fingers crossed) about one to two months from being done with the bulk of the work. A ton of things like tiles and cabinetry pieces are on backorder this fall, so we very well may move in and still have work being finished up.
And now…for the fun stuff!
Master Bathroom Renovation Update
Words to describe my master bathroom inspiration: California Cool, Classic, Clean, Moroccan, Natural
Let’s talk tile…
This picture has served as my primary source of inspiration for our master bathroom renovation. I stumbled across it on Pinterest and feel in love with the texture of the wall and how it looked like really cool and modern exposed brick.
I dig a little digging and found that the bathroom in the photo is actually a Portland renovation done by Emily Henderson of HGTV fame. And that the tile is handmade by local Portland company, Pratt & Larson.
What’s crazy about these tiles is that it looks like it juts out in places and is jagged like exposed brick, but that’s all the texturing on the tile itself. The wall is totally flush. And those tiles are all one color, just in different textures.
Pratt and Larson has a whole book of different textures and finishes you can choose from.
Their tiles can be really expensive ($40 a sq foot), so we opted to do a “statement shower” in their tiles and then create the rest of bathroom out of more budget friendly materials (it also helps we have a tiny shower!).
It would’ve been cool to have it come up behind the vanity like this, but it just doesn’t work for our budget.
About the floors…
I LOVEEEEE a pattern. Patterned tile pulls me in every time. I wish I could have the guts to have a bathroom like these:
I really wanted to do a patterned floor in the bathroom (because I wasn’t brave enough to do it in the kitchen!).
But knowing we wanted to do the blue-grey wall tile, it was all about finding the right balance.
We decided on this floor, which we actually bought from Wayfair on sale for under $5 a square foot.
Let’s talk about cabinets…
As I mentioned, our bathroom is pretty small, so we ended up getting custom cabinetry from a local company in Portland because nothing else would find the scale of the bathroom.
The cabinets will be a white-ish shaker style.
What’s next…
Now, we’re in the process of trying to find all of the pieces that bring it all together: bathroom mirrors, cabinetry hardware, countertops and lights. Also, it’s really hard to find all of these things and have them match.
We have been majorly struggling to find unique bathroom mirrors that fit the size (under 30″ tall) and style that we need them to be.
On lighting, because our vanity space is limited, we have to have our wall sconces in the middle of the wall. It’s been challenging to find nice ones that have multiple lights and fit the space nicely.
Fixtures, tub, toilet, sinks will all be Kohler.
