Can you believe we just a week away from Thanksgiving?! Man, this year is just flying by. We will be heading to Alabama for Thanksgiving to visit family, and while we won’t be doing a ton of cooking, I wanted to share five Thanksgiving recipes to try out.
Sure, you need the old family classics. In our family, that means a Grand Marnier soaked-stuffing my husband makes every year. I think he’ll need to do a guest post on that next T-giving!
But we also love trying out new dishes every year. And in doing so, we’ve found some great additions to our holiday meal.
This list is made up of a few recipes that we have tried and have really enjoyed and a few others that I’m hoping to test out this year.
Whipped Sweet Potatoes and Bananas with Honey – Tyler Florence
Ok, I know what you’re thinking…this sounds really weird. But let me tell you, it is AMAZING!
We discovered this recipe when we were living in Montana. Sadly, when you work in sports, you rarely get a Thanksgiving off, so we would get together with friends and throw a big Friendsgiving.
This is one of the recipes that we discovered that first year away from home and it has stuck.
And I actually make it throughout the year if I’m craving whipped sweet potatoes, often lightening it up by not adding the crumble topping and halving the amount of butter in it. Even without, it still is really tasty.

Whole Wheat Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins – Ambitious Kitchen
Delicious chocolate-y, pumpkin muffins that are only 144 calories a piece? Count me in!
I made these a couple of weeks ago during a major muffin craving and again this week, and they definitely satisfy my sweet tooth.
To make these gluten free, I sub Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Flour for the whole wheat flour. I also added a handful of pecans this time around.
These would be perfect to make this weekend, pop in the freezer and reheat Thanksgiving morning as you prepare your feast.

Healthy Sweet Potato Casserole – Well Plated
By now, can you guess what my favorite part of the meal is? I cannot get enough sweet potato recipes. This one caught my eye with its sweet pecan oat topping, and I love that it can easily be made vegan.

Buttery Herbed Mashed Potatoes – Half Baked Harvest
We had a lot of mashed potatoes out of a box growing up, so I never was a huge fan of them. But this recipe that adds browned butter, crème fraîche and sage definitely looks like it could change my mind.

Healthy Soft Pumpkin Cookies with Salted Maple Frosting – Ambitious Kitchen
I am loving Ambitious Kitchen right now…especially as I try to rectify my baked goods cravings with being as healthy as I can during the holiday swing.
I have been really trying to lighten up my baking this year, subbing things like maple syrup, honey or coconut sugar for traditional sugars and ghee or coconut oil for butter. Ambitious Kitchen’s recipes does a great job of guiding you through that.
Also, the fact that she compares these to those store-bought Lofthouse cookies was enough to sell me (does anyone else love those?!).
