Gucci-Inspired Looks

Happy Monday (Gucci) gang!  Gucci has been back in a big way the past few years.  The brand nearly doubled its sales in 2018 and 55% of those sales came from buyers under the age of 35.  They’ve done a great job redefining luxury and embracing pop culture in a way that few big name brands have.  So of course that means everywhere you look in high street fashion, there are little nods to Gucci everywhere.  That’s why I am dedicating a whole post to Gucci-inspired looks.Gucci Inspired Looks - 1901 sweater

Double G’s aside, nothing to me is as instantly recognizable as Gucci’s green (now at times blue) and red stripe, which, it actually calls their “House Web stripe.”

Over the last few seasons, this has also morphed into more grosgrain ribbon use (some of my favorite Gucci resort looks in that link.)  That’s why when I splurged on my honeymoon this summer on a Gucci bag in Rome, I made sure that detail was front and center.Gucci-Inspired Looks - Gucci bag

Did you know…Gucci’s red and green striping was inspired by English horseback riding.  Guccio Gucci was working as a porter at the famed Savoy hotel in London, when he was inspired to start a line of high-end traveling cases after handling so many pieces of rich folks’ luggage.

In horseback riding, the belt that goes under the belly of a horse to hold the saddle on is called a web.  That web was his inspiration for the stripes that go around the belly of the bag.

Nordstrom’s “1901” brand has been incorporating the iconic stripes look a lot.  That’s where my sweater below is from.

As has Boden.  This dress looks just like the one Kate Middleton wore a few years back.

TIP:  If you’re looking to buy luxury goods when you travel, try to buy from designers made in the country you’re visiting.  Not only for nostalgia’s sake, but in many cases, it will be much cheaper too.  For Europe, that’s due to VAT refunds for NON-EU citizens.  Obviously double check exchange rates/ bank fees, but we saved a couple hundred bucks buying Gucci and Ferragamo products in Italy
